Latvia is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by Estonia (border length 343 km), to the south by Lithuania (588 km), to the east by the Russian Federation (276 km), and to the southeast by Belarus (141 km).[5] Across the Baltic Sea to the west lies Sweden. The territory of Latvia covers 64,589 km2 (24,938 sq mi) and it has a temperate seasonal climate.

The Latvians are Baltic people culturally related to the Estonians and Lithuanians, with the Latvian language having many similarities with Lithuanian, but not with the Estonian language (a Finnic language). Today the Latvian and Lithuanian languages are the only surviving members of the Baltic languages of the Indo-European family. The modern name of Latvia is thought to originate from the ancient Latvian name Latvji, which, like the name of Lithuania, may have originated from the river named Latuva. The country is also the home of a large Russian minority of whom many are non-citizens.
 

 

 

  The commercial banking sector is controlled by the Bank of Latvia, which is an institution independent of the Latvian government. The Bank of Latvia was founded in August of 1990.

Latvian banks are working in accordance with the common principles of banking secrecy. The Latvian Credit Institutions Law was recently amended with the rules of provision the information by the credit institutions to state institutions, state officials and other institutions. These amendments were affected by the Council of Europe Convention on Laundering, Search, Seizure and Confiscation of the Proceeds of Crime and on the Financing of Terrorism and developing court practice.

Since 1999, Latvia is a member of the World Trade Organization, and in 2004 the country became the member of NATO and the European Union. Latvia plans to enter the Euro zone but, because of the inflation level being above the guidelines, introduction of Euro was postponed.
